The Return of the Vikings: The Battle of Maldon 991

The Return of the Vikings: The Battle of Maldon 991

by Donald Scragg
On a day in August, one thousand years ago, a fleet of some ninety viking ships sailed into the estuary of the Blackwater river in Essex. Fresh from the ravage of Ipswich, under the command (almost certainly) of the king of Denmark, they were intent no doubt on the rich spoils to be had from the royal Mint at Maldon. Facing them on the shore was Byrhtnoth, the second nobleman of the realm, with an army drawn from the households of the region. The ensuing fight was terrible in its ferocity. Byrhtnoth and many of his companions were slain, and eventually the vikings triumphed. Their victory marked the collapse of effective armed resistance to the Danes, and presaged the end of Anglo-Saxon England.

The Vikings: Voyagers of Discovery and Plunder

The Vikings: Voyagers of Discovery and Plunder

by Magnus Magnusson, Mark Harrison, Keith Durham, Ian Heath
The history of the Vikings is bloody and eventful, and Viking warriors capture the popular imagination to this day. Viking raids reached from Norway to North Africa, they established the dukedom of Normandy, provided the Byzantine Emperor's bodyguard and landed on the shores of America 500 years before Columbus. The authors provide a detailed examination of the Viking Hersir, the raiding warrior of the Viking world, and the famed Viking longship that transported the Vikings through treacherous waters to their bloody raids. This beautifully illustrated book includes new material about the Vikings in North America and the lives the Viking led at home. More information and prices from:

Viking Kings of Britain and Ireland: The Dynasty of Ivarr to A.D. 1014

Viking Kings of Britain and Ireland: The Dynasty of Ivarr to A.D. 1014

by Clare Downham
Vikings plagued the coasts of Ireland and Britain in the 790s. Over time, their raids became more intense and by the mid-ninth century vikings had established a number of settlements in Ireland and Britain and had become heavily involved with local politics. A particularly successful viking leader named Ívarr campaigned on both sides of the Irish Sea in the 860s. His descendants dominated the major seaports of Ireland and challenged the power of kings in Britain during the later ninth and tenth centuries.

The Vikings: Culture and Conquest

The Vikings: Culture and Conquest

by Martin Arnold
The story of the Vikings is one of the most dramatic in European history. From their base in Scandinavia, Viking warriors and settlers spread across northern Europe, into Russia and across the Atlantic. After their first impact as fearsome raiders, destroying monasteries and plundering coastal settlements, the Vikings turned to conquest in England, Ireland and Normandy. In their longships, they also penetrated into the Mediterranean and as far as Byzantium, as well as establishing settlements in Iceland and Greenland and discovering Vinland, or America. This book is a concise and clear survey of who the Vikings were, what they did, why they did it and how we know about them.

The Northern Conquest: Vikings in Britain and Ireland

The Northern Conquest: Vikings in Britain and Ireland

by Katherine Holman
The Vikings have been traditionally perceived as brutal barbarians who sailed to Britain and Ireland to loot, rape and pillage. The evidence presented here suggests a considerably less dramatic but no less fascinating picture which reveals the Vikings' remarkable achievements and their influence in shaping the political history of these islands.
